September 2014 Madman Top 25 MMA Rankings + Top 25 WMMA Rankings with Complete List of Upcoming Ranked Fights

Official MMAmadman.com Mixed Martial Arts Rankings

The Madman MMA Rankings are based primarily on results from the current year (2014) and the previous 3 years (2013, 2012, 2011) with career records, head-to-head competition, results against common opponents, methods of victory, and current clout within the sport factored into the formula.

All MMA rankings are subjective. Our rankings are not intended to be definitive, but rather an ever-changing rough draft providing fans a glimpse into the pro MMA landscape on any given day. The goal is to be as objective as possible by allowing the results to speak for themselves, and otherwise finding a fair balance between results and performances. Given the enormity of the task of ranking hundreds of fighters in 13 weight classes, there are times when projections are necessary. The intangibles stem from MMA being a one-on-one contact sport whose athletes often have short shelf-lives, and in which the top fighters generally only compete 3 times a year at most. Whenever possible, actual results and in-cage performances are weighted heavier than potential or perceived favorites.

Active pro MMA fighters with at least 2 professional mixed martial arts fights are eligible to be ranked if they have fought in the past year, if they currently hold a title in a major MMA organization, or if they have fought in the past 2 years and have an Upcoming Fight currently scheduled. Fighters are ranked in the weight class in which they last fought, unless they have announced definitive plans to return to a division in which they have previously fought in the past 3 years.

Ronaldo Souza waited 6 long years to avenge his knockout loss to Gegard Mousasi. "The Dreamcatcher" won the vacant DREAM middleweight championship with a first-round KO of Jacare, thanks to a brutal upkick, in Japan in September 2008. Having since evolved from one of the best jiu jitsu players in the world into one of the best MMA fighters in the world, Jacare did not allow history to repeat itself. Jacare scored takedowns in every round, and methodically broken down Mousasi before submitting him near the end of the third round.

Watch complete fight highlights of Joe Lauzon's TKO victory over Michael Chiesa at UFC Fight Night 50: Jacare vs Mousasi 2 on Friday, September 5, 2014, at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.

The always-entertaining Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon, a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 5, was an underdog on the betting lines, but brought the fight to TUF 15 winner Michael "Maverick" Chiesa regardless. Lauzon busted open Chiesa with a big knee to the face, and then tenderized the wound with punches until the ringside physician called off the fight. The never-say-die Chiesa was upset with the stoppage, but the placement of the cut was above his eye, which generally results in a fight being stopped. Chiesa's disappointment was likely mitigated by the $50,000 'Fight of the Night' bonus he was awarded along with Lauzon.
