IMPACT FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP 2: THE UPRISING - SYDNEY was held Sunday July 18, 2010 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in Haymarket, Sydney, Australia. The main event saw a clash of UFC legends as Pedro "The Rock" Rizzo disposed of Ken "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Shamrock with leg kicks and punches in the first round. Shamrock, who has become only a danger to himself at this late stage in his career, is 2-8 in his last 10 fights and should really consider following in the footsteps of his younger brother, Frank Shamrock, who recently announced his retirement from MMA.
The co-main event saw brash Brit Paul "Semtex" Daley make a successful return after being given a lifetime UFC ban for
sucker punching Josh Koscheck after their
UFC 113 fight was over. Daley and Daniel Acacio fought into the third round at Impact FC 2, likely splitting the first two rounds, but in the final round, Daley landed a brutal elbow that opened up a cut on Acacio's forehead and elicited a verbal submission from the Brazilian fighter.
In a fight that was supposed to feature Bob "The Beast" Sapp, Soa "The Hulk" Palelei instead fought Brad Morris in a super heavyweight bout. Sapp was pulled from the card after failing to come to terms with Impact FC in time for the promotion to arrange flight plans for Sapp out of Bulgaria, where he is currently filming a new
CONAN movie. Morris stepped up at the last minute to fight fellow former UFC fighter Palelei, but Morris fell victim to a keylock at the 4:20 mark of the first round. Morris has now lost 3 straight fights.
After 15 minutes, Paulo Filho versus Denis Kang was ruled a split draw. One judge scored the fight 30-27 for Kang, but a 29-28 score for Filho, who
struggled to make weight, and a 29-29 draw score, resulted in no winner being declared in this fight between former top middleweights who are now struggling for relevancy. A rematch will likely be booked for one of Impact FC's next shows in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in September 2010.
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's brother Murilo "Ninja" Rua scored a guillotine choke submission victory over TUF 7 cast member Jeremy "The BAMF" May in the first round. Rua has now won 4 straight fights and could possibly soon find himself fighting in the UFC for the first time.
The Ultimate Fighter 7 finalist Jesse "JT Money" Taylor, who was
booted from the TUF tournament due to a drunken post-show rampage in Las Vegas, took out MMA legend Murilo Bustamante with strikes in the second round. Bustamante indicated he was unable to continue due to dizziness after referee John McCarthy stood up the two fighters, so the fight was waved off for a TKO victory for Taylor. This was Bustamante's first fight in over two and a half years, and although he arguably won the first round against Taylor, he obviously doesn't have the stamina to compete with a young, strong athlete like Taylor.
Australian heavyweight "Big" Jim York used his submission skills to choke out his countryman and former kickboxer Peter "The Chief" Graham, whose MMA record dropped to a pathetic 1-5. Graham holds a 54-11 pro kickboxing record and a 6-3 pro boxing record, but has been unable to find any success since entering the world of MMA in 2008.
Recent Strikeforce signee Glover Teixeira needed just under 3 minutes to finish off Marko "Cro Kid" Peselj with strikes. Teixeira picked up the quickest win of the night.
The first two fights of the night both featured all Australian fighters. Richie "Vas" Vaculik tapped out winless Glenn Taylor-Smith, who was a late replacement, with a rear-naked choke in the second round to improve his record to 6-1. In the opening fight, Manuel "Chalate" Rodriguez also improved his record to 6-1, with a technical submission over Shane "Knockout" Nix, who went to sleep from a north-south choke.
