UFC 118 RESULTS: Frankie Edgar Solidifies Status as Best 155-lber in World, Couture Strangles Toney in Boston - 8/28/10

UFC 118: EDGAR VS PENN 2 was held Saturday August 28, 2010 at the TD Garden arena in Boston, Massachusetts.

UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie "The Answer" Edgar successfully defended his title against challenger and former champion BJ "The Prodigy" Penn.

Frank Edgar won a dominant 5-round unanimous decision over BJ Penn, and clearly defined a new era in the UFC's 155-pound division. Gray "The Bully" Maynard also won a dominant decision over former lightweight contender Kenny Florian, and earned himself the next title shot against Edgar. Maynard is the only man with a win over Edgar, so that should put a bit of steam behind the build-up to Maynard's championship bid in the coming months.

In the co-main event, Randy "The Natural" Couture did what seemed painfully obvious, and quickly took pro boxer James "Lights Out" Toney down to the mat and tapped him out. While the fight did go past the halfway mark of the first round, there was never a moment where Couture wasn't in control. As has been evident since UFC 1, a pure boxer is completely out of his element in MMA. In a post-fight interview, UFC President Dana White confirmed Toney will not be back in the Octagon.

UFC 118 BONUSES: $60K Bonus Payouts for Nate Diaz, Marcus Davis and Joe Lauzon

The UFC awarded bonuses for UFC 118: EDGAR VS PENN 2 in the amount of $60,000. After each of their events, the UFC awards performance-based payout bonuses to usually at least 4 fighters. This time, there was not a KO/TKO on the card, so no Knockout of the Night bonus was given, and only 3 fighters received bonuses.

Nate Diaz and Marcus "The Irish Hand Grenade" Davis earned Fight of the Night honors for their 3-round war. This is the fourth time Diaz has won Fight of the Night and the third time Davis has won the honor. The fighters combined for a UFC-record 531 significant strike attempts. Here's FightMetric on the record.
Congratulations to Nate Diaz and Marcus Davis. Their combined 531 significant strike attempts (328 for Diaz, 203 for Davis) sets the new UFC record for most in a three round fight. They lag behind the overall record of 590 set by Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski, although that was a five round fight.
Submission of the Night went to Joe Lauzon for the armbar finish to his decimation of fellow TUF 5 castmate Gabe "Godzilla" Ruediger. Lauzon was fighting in his hometown and put on an incredible show for the Boston crowd. Lauzon beat out Randy Couture, Nate Diaz, Dan Miller and Mike Pierce, who were all also eligible for the submission bonus.

FIGHT OF THE NIGHT: Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis

All 3 of these fighters are $60,000 richer thanks to their UFC 118 performances.
