Bellator Fighting Championships presented Bellator 64: Askren vs Lima on Friday, April 6, 2012, at Caesars Windsor in Ontario, Canada. The main card aired live on MTV2. The entire event also streamed live at Spike.com.
In the main event, Ben Askren did what Ben Askren does. The Olympic wrestler won a clean sweep unanimous decision over Douglas Lima by repeatedly taking him to the mat and masterfully controlling him. Lima had been on a tear, winning 9 fights in a row, before running into the relentless enigma that is Ben "Funky" Askren.
Marlon Sandro outpointed Alexandre "Popo" Bezerra to advance to his second Bellator final. Sandro made it to the finals of the 2011 Summer Series featherweight tournament, but lost by KO to current Bellator Featherweight Champion Pat Curran. A win in this season's finale (against the winner of Bellator 65's Daniel Straus vs Mike Corey) would earn Sandro his much desired rematch with Pat Curran.
Three of Western Canada's top regional MMA promotions have announced a merger. Aggression MMA, Armageddon FC, and AX Combat have combined their resources to form Aggression Fighting Championships, a new mixed martial arts super-promotion that will challenge the MFC as Canada's top MMA promotion.
The newly rebranded AFC will continue with the current Armageddon FC lineage at AFC 8 on April 14, 2012.
Worldwide Mixed Martial Arts in association with the Wounded Warriors Project and Fort Bliss presented WMMA 1: McCorkle vs Heden on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, TX. The main card aired live on PPV.
Former UFC heavyweight Sean "Big Sexy" McCorkle had won 6 straight fights since being released from the UFC last year – but against mostly mediocre competition with a combined record of 37-42.
In the main event of this inaugural WMMA event, Sean McCorkle faced his first real test since the UFC. And he failed. Top-tier journeyman Brian Heden pulled off the upset by TKO in the second round after exhausting the 6-foot-7 super heavyweight McCorkle in the opening round with chopping leg kicks.
