The newly rebranded Bellator MMA Championship Tournaments presented Bellator 85: Chandler vs Hawn on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the UCI Bren Center on the UC-Irvine campus in Irvine, California. The main card aired live on Spike TV. This was the first time Bellator held an event on a Thursday night, and marked the promotional debut of Bellator on Spike TV, the former home of the UFC.
On this historic night, two Bellator champions successfully defended their titles in excellent fights. Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler scored an incredible second-round submission victory over Rick Hawn, and Bellator Featherweight Champion Pat Curran notched a split decision win over Patricio "Pitbull" Freire in a very close and very entertaining 25-minute fight that begs for a rematch.
Mikhail Zayats, Jacob Noe and Emanuel Newton advanced to the semifinals of the Bellator Season 8 Light Heavyweight Tournament. Zayats and Noe, both Bellator tournament newcomers, upset former UFC fighters Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Seth Petruzelli, respectively. Newton earned his second Bellator tournament semifinal berth with a submission victory over Bellator rookie Atanas Djambazov. The final 205-pound semifinal spot will be determined next week at Bellator 86 when former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal makes his Bellator debut against Przemyslaw Mysiala.
