UFC 159 RESULTS: With a Broken Toe, Jon Jones Kills the Self-Proclaimed Legend of Chael Sonnen in New Jersey - 4/27/13

The Ultimate Fighting Championship presented UFC 159: Jones vs Sonnen on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

On a night that saw two fights end early due to eyepokes, and one fight end due to a gruesome dislocated thumb, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones suffered a broken toe in the first round against Chael Sonnen. Despite his mangled toe, Jones was able to finish Sonnen with strikes with just 27 seconds left in the round. Had Sonnen been able to survive until the bell, then he almost certainly would have won the fight by injury TKO and become the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. After the fight, Sonnen hinted at possible retirement, which is likely given his full-time gig as the co-host of the weekly show UFC Tonight on FUEL TV with Kenny Florian.

Here's a GIF of Jones' toe breaking. Be warned, it is graphic.

FAIL OF THE NIGHT: Kevin Mulhall

Referee "Creepy" Kevin Mulhall, who bears a disturbing resemblance to LOST's Ethan Rom, gets the Fail of the Night for his stoppage in the Ovince St. Preux vs Gian Villante fight. After Villante took an inadvertent finger to the eye, Mulhall immediately asked him if he could see, and he replied that he could not – because he had just been poked in the eye! Instead of giving Villante a reasonable amount of time to recover from the eyepoke before asking him for a fight-ending answer, or at least calling in the doctor, Mulhall immediately called off the fight. Villante protested, saying that he could, in fact, see and did not want the fight stopped, but the decision had already hastily been made by Mulhall. Ironically, St. Preux then won the closely contested fight by a technical decision brought on by his unpenalized foul.
