UFC FIGHT NIGHT 34 RESULTS: Tarec Saffiedine Wins Stunner Against Hyun Gyu Lim in Singapore - 1/4/14

The Ultimate Fighting Championship presented their first event of 2014, UFC Fight Night 34: Saffiedine vs Lim, on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at the Marina Bay Sands in Marina Bay, Singapore. This was the UFC's debut event in Singapore, and the company's first-ever event to exclusively stream online. This groundbreaking untelevised regional UFC event featured 15 UFC-debuting fighters, with just 5 fighters on the card having previous Octagon experience. The entire card streamed live on the newly launched UFC Fight Pass, starting in the wee hours of the morning for North Americans at 6:30 am EST.

In the main event, a back-and-forth barnburner, former Strikeforce welterweight champion Tarec "Sponge" Saffiedine made his long-awaited UFC debut with a 25-minute unanimous decision victory over late replacement Hyun Gyu "The Ace" Lim. South Korea's Lim was promoted to the main event after Jake Ellenberger had to withdraw due to injury. The Belgian striking technician Saffiedine put a methodical beating on Lim, who opted not to utilize his significant reach advantage in favor of his usual close-quarters berserker fighting style. By the mid-point of the fight, Lim was limping around the Octagon with a badly bruised leg from taking so many low kicks. Sheer heart and determination kept Lim in the fight, as he continued to forge ahead despite his decreased mobility.

Tarec Saffiedine proved equally resilient, however, fending off Hyn Gyu Lim's awe-inspiring last-ditch efforts in the later rounds. The fight ended at a fever pitch, with Saffiedine reeling from a barrage of strikes. While this final hurrah by Lim had the crowd on the edge of their seats, it wasn't enough to steal back the fight on the judges' scorecards. This was an incredible fight, a makeshift main event that earned its spot at the top of the card with two amazing performances from two rising stars in the UFC's 170-pound division.

The featherweight co-main event featured another long-awaited UFC debut, as Japanese MMA legend Tatsuya Kawajiri fought in the Octagon for the first time. Kawajiri submitted the previously undefeated Sean Soriano, who showed a great deal of courage and confidence by stepping up to make his UFC debut as a late replacement against a significantly more experienced fighter. Soriano had been touted as one of the Blackzilian's best strikers, and was able to show some of those skills as he looked good early against Kawajiri, before eventually being taken to the mat and submitted by the relentless grinder.
