Bellator MMA Championship Tournaments presented Bellator 95: Curran vs Shamhalaev on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the Ovation Hall at Revel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The main card aired live on Spike TV as Episode 11 of Season 8, and served as the eighth season finale.
Bellator's first season on Spike TV, after moving over from MTV2, started and ended with Bellator Featherweight Champion Pat Curran successfully defending his 145-pound title. Curran fended off tournament winners Patricio "Pitbull" Freire and Shahbulat Shamhalaev, earning a hard-fought split decision nod over Pitbull at the Bellator 85 season premiere, and a stealthy first-round submission victory over Shamhalaev to cap off the season finale at Bellator 95.
Magomedrasul Khasbulaev aka "Frodo" won the Bellator Season 8 Featherweight Tournament with a unanimous decision victory over Mike "The Marine" Richman. Khasbulaev is now positioned in line behind Daniel Straus for a crack at the 145-pound title. Given Straus' recent drug-related legal troubles in Florida, Frodo could find himself in a title fight with Pat Curran sooner rather than later.
Former WEC light heavyweight champion and old school slugger Doug "The Rhino" Marshall defied the oddsmakers for the third straight time to win the Bellator Season 8 Middleweight Tournament. Marshall scored a brutal first-round knockout of Bellator mainstay Brett Cooper to earn a title fight against Bellator Middleweight Champion Alexander Shlemenko. This sure-to-be highly anticipated match-up will pair the heaviest hitter in Bellator's middleweight division in Marshall against the division's most dynamic striker in Shlemenko. Fireworks shall ensue.
