WSOF 5 RESULTS: Andrei Arlovski Takes Decision over Mike Kyle in Atlantic City at World Series of Fighting 5 - 9/14/13

The MMA World Series of Fighting presented WSOF 5: Arlovski vs Kyle on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at the Revel Resort and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The main card aired live on the NBC Sports Network.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski scored a close unanimous decision win over former Strikeforce gatekeeper Mike "MAK" Kyle in the main event. The co-main event saw Dave Branch earn a much more decisive decision victory over Danillo Villefort to advance to a WSOF Middleweight Championship bout.

Dave Branch was supposed to the fight the winner of Jesse Taylor vs Elvis Mutapcic, but that fight was cancelled right before it was about to begin after a New Jersey State Athletic Commission official accused Mutapcic of taking unauthorized medication backstage. Here was the official commission statement from Nick Lembo on this bizarre incident:
There were some prescriptions that weren't given to our doctors during the physicals, and that weren't approved by us, the commission. So since we don't know what they are and what they do, we cancelled the fight. We can't take that chance to have that fight go off, so those things need to be looked at, and they need to be talked about. We just feel that we're not going to have a fight in New Jersey when we don't know what someone is taking.
For his part, Elvis Mutapcic denied taking any pills backstage, saying he would submit to an immediate drug test by blood or hair sample. Mutapcic said one of his cornermen, who was approximately the same size as him, and wearing the same clothes and hat, took prescription medication from a bottle related to his heart condition. This bottle, according to WSOF President Ray Sefo, contained multiple prescription pills when inspected, thus the commission's concern. This all hinges, however, on the witness' claim being accurate. It seems highly unlikely that Mutapcic would risk his fight purse by doing something so stupid after having spent so much time and money preparing for this fight. And assuming he was given a post-fight drug test, he would have been caught doing whatever the official believed he could have been doing anyway. Ten weeks of Mutapcic's time and his training expenses and licensing fees were wasted based on a far-fetched story that was likely simply a case of mistaken identity. Given the general clusterf-ckedness of the WSOF, it's almost not surprising that they would be the promotion to have a fight scrapped in such a head-scratching manner.

The highlight of the night was Derrick "Caveman" Mehmen's one-punch knockout of Rolles Gracie, who took a Ric Flair-esque delayed flop to the canvas after being caught by a lunging right hand from Mehmen. The BJJ black belt Gracie surprisingly won the first round based on his boxing. Gracie choose to stand with Mehmen, and showed incredibly improved striking for the first 5 minutes of the fight. The submission artist chose to play with fire for a bit too long, however, and got burned once the club-carrying Caveman finally found his range in the second round. Here's a GIF of the KO and Rolles Gracie's EPIC flop (by Zombie Prophet for BloodyElbow):

WSOF 2 RESULTS: First-Time Heavyweight Rumble Johnson Outpoints Andrei Arlovski at World Series of Fighting 2 - 3/23/13

The MMA World Series of Fighting presented WSOF 2: Arlovski vs Johnson on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the Revel Resort and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The main card aired live on the NBC Sports Network.

In the main event, former UFC welterweight Anthony "Rumble" Johnson made his long-awaited heavyweight debut with a close decision victory over former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. The 230-pound Johnson fought in the UFC at 170 pounds, but missed weight three times before being fired. His last offense was his most egregious, when Johnson came in a whopping 12 pounds heavy for what was supposed to be a middleweight bout with Vitor Belfort at UFC 142. Instead, it essentially became a light heavyweight bout – the division to which Johnson will now return after this lone, fully puffed-up foray into the land of giants.

Here are the Main Event Video Highlights.
