Strikeforce held their final event,
Strikeforce: Marquardt vs Saffiedine, on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at the Chesapeake Energy Center in Oklahoma City, OK. The main card aired live on Showtime.
In the main event – the final fight in the history of the Strikeforce promotion – Tarec Saffiedine won the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Nate Marquardt. Saffiedine used low kicks to
badly bruise Marquardt's thigh, which effectively immobilized the now-former 170-pound champ. Marquardt expressed an eagerness to return to the UFC during pre-fight interviews, but those plans could now be sidetracked after a lethargic performance and some really bad game planning against Saffiedine, who will certainly ride the momentum of this victory into the UFC.
Daniel Cormier will definitely be moving over to the UFC, as he has already negotiated a UFC contract. Cormier will likely be joined in the UFC by Josh Barnett, Gegard Mousasi and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, assuming these high-profile fighters can come to terms with the UFC. Also making their way to the UFC should be fellow winners Ryan Couture, Tim Kennedy, Pat Healy, Roger Gracie, Adriano Martins and Estevan Payan. Also, losers Ed Herman, who was on loan to Strikeforce from the UFC as a late replacement, and Kurt Holobaugh, also a late replacement fighting out of his natural weight class, will likely move over to the UFC, along with KJ Noons, an exciting fighter who put on yet another incredible performance in a losing effort.
